Rental car towing at Newark Airport: breakdowns on the way to the return, and cars that will not start
The on-airport rental car facility on the AirTrain line, and the off-airport rental lots along Routes 1 & 9 and in Elizabeth. A rental that fails near EWR is still in your name until the counter checks it in.
What to do when a rental car fails near Newark Airport
Call the rental company first because the car is theirs; if they ask you to arrange the move or their contractor is hours out, we take the car on a flatbed to the return or branch they name and hand you an itemized receipt for reimbursement, at the same $149 flat booking fee, $129 when you book online.
Ask the rental desk before you book us
Rental agreements differ. Some companies send their own roadside partner, some tell you to arrange a tow and claim it, and some want the car at a specific branch rather than the airport.
Get the instruction and a reference number, then call us with it. The dispatcher puts the reference on your receipt.
The on-airport rental facility
The rental counters and return lanes are reached from the airport's own roads and the AirTrain line. If the car dies on the approach road, the Port Authority police move it; we pick it up from wherever they leave it, or from the return lot if the staff let us in.
Off-airport rental lots on Routes 1 & 9
Several rental brands run their own lots off the airport along Routes 1 & 9 and in Elizabeth, with shuttles to the terminals. These lots are easy for a flatbed, and the staff usually point the truck to a drop spot.
Why rentals ride on a flatbed
Plenty of EWR rental fleets are AWD or electric now, and neither should be towed with two wheels down. We load rentals on a flatbed as a rule, and photograph the car at pickup and drop-off so nobody argues about damage later.

Call nowRental car returns: common questions
Short answers to what people ask about this page; the dispatcher can answer the rest.
Will the rental company pay for the tow?
That depends on your agreement and the cause of the breakdown. We give you an itemized receipt the rental company or your card issuer can reimburse.
Can you tow a rental to a different branch than the airport?
Yes, if the rental company tells you to. Give the dispatcher the branch address and the mileage is quoted on the call.
My rental is electric and the charge ran out. Can you move it?
Yes, on a flatbed, to a charger or to the return the rental company names.
Do you take pictures of the rental before towing?
Yes. The driver photographs the car at pickup and at delivery and can send you the photos, which helps with any damage question at the counter.
Anything else? Ask on the call.
